Remembering Wheesung: A Voice That Defined an Era

Choi Whee-Sung, known to fans as Wheesung and also by his stage name Realslow, was found dead at his home on March 10th, leaving behind a legacy of heartfelt music and unforgettable performances.

Wheesung made his solo debut in 2002 with his album Like A Movie, instantly capturing listeners with his soulful voice. His distinct vocal tone set him apart from other artists of the time, making him a standout in the K-pop industry. His second album, It’s Real, further cemented his status as a top-tier artist, selling exceptionally well and touching the hearts of many.

One particular song from Like A Movie has always remained close to my heart. Though I never knew its exact title, it has long been one of my favorite K-pop songs—a testament to Wheesung’s ability to pour raw emotion into his music and move listeners with his powerful vocals.

Beyond his success as a singer, Wheesung was also a gifted songwriter and producer. His influence extended to the next generation of artists, most notably playing a key role in the creation of Korean-American singer Ailee’s debut song, Heaven. His ability to craft melodies and lyrics that resonated with audiences showcased his deep understanding of music and artistry.

Wheesung’s passing is a heartbreaking loss to the music world, but his voice and contributions will live on forever. Rest in peace, Wheesung—you will always be remembered.
