Steelers acquire Metcalf in trade with Seahawks

The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a major move, acquiring star wide receiver DK Metcalf in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks. As part of the deal, the Steelers will send their second-round pick (52nd overall) and seventh-round pick (223rd overall) in the 2025 NFL Draft to Seattle, while receiving the Seahawks’ sixth-round pick (185th overall). Along with the trade, Metcalf has signed a new five-year contract with Pittsburgh.

Metcalf was originally drafted by the Seahawks in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft and spent six seasons in Seattle. During that time, he appeared in 97 games, starting 93, and recorded 438 receptions for 6,324 yards, averaging 14.4 yards per catch, with 48 touchdowns—ranking eighth among active NFL players. He also has three touchdowns of over 70 yards, including a career-long 84-yard score.

Known for his physical style of play, Metcalf credits his father, former NFL offensive lineman Terrence Metcalf, for instilling toughness in him. “I’m a physical receiver,” said Metcalf. “Big shout-out to my pops, who was an O-lineman in this league for a little bit. He instilled that in me, and I just try to play the game a different way. God blessed me with the talents and this opportunity, and I’m not going to take it for granted.”

Metcalf has recorded 15 career 100-yard games, including one against the Steelers in 2023. His career-high single-game receiving total is 177 yards, set against the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020. He has also achieved three 1,000-yard seasons and has 13 career receptions of 50 yards or more, ranking seventh among active receivers.

A two-time Pro Bowler (2020, 2023) and a second-team AP All-Pro selection in 2020, Metcalf sees Pittsburgh as the ideal landing spot. “I felt ecstatic just to hear about the Steelers because I thought about the meeting I had with Coach Mike Tomlin at the 2019 Combine,” he said. “He always spoke highly of me, and even in the league, before or after games, he kept that same rapport with me. It just felt like the right decision.”

In the 2024 season, Metcalf played in 15 games, starting 12, and recorded 66 receptions for 992 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 15 yards per catch. He is one of only two players in NFL history, along with Hall of Famer Randy Moss, to post at least 50 receptions, 900 yards, and five touchdowns in each of their first six seasons.

Metcalf holds multiple Seahawks records, including the most receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns through a player’s first six seasons. He ranks fourth on Seattle’s all-time receiving list. In 2023, he posted his third 1,000-yard season, recording 66 receptions for 1,114 yards and eight touchdowns. His 73-yard touchdown that year was Seattle’s longest play from scrimmage.

His best statistical season came in 2022, when he set a career-high with 90 receptions—fourth-most in Seahawks history—while tallying 1,048 yards and six touchdowns. He also led Seattle in 2021 with 75 receptions and a team-high 12 touchdowns, ranking fourth in the NFL.

Metcalf’s first breakout year was 2020, when he caught 83 passes for a career-best 1,303 yards and 10 touchdowns. That season, he set the Seahawks’ single-season receiving yards record, surpassing Hall of Famer Steve Largent.

As a rookie in 2019, he made an immediate impact, catching 58 passes for 900 yards and seven touchdowns. His receptions and yards ranked second and third, respectively, among rookie receivers, and both totals were the second-highest in Seahawks’ rookie history.

Before entering the NFL, Metcalf played college football at Ole Miss, where he started 19 of 21 games and recorded 67 receptions for 1,228 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Metcalf brings his explosive playmaking ability to Pittsburgh, and the Steelers are eager to see how he enhances their offense in the coming seasons.
