Antonio Mohamed Pleased with Toluca’s Win but Sees Room for Growth
Following Toluca’s dominant victory over Puebla, head coach Antonio Mohamed expressed satisfaction with both the team’s attacking prowess and defensive solidity. However, he emphasized that there is still room for improvement in understanding different game situations.
Toluca’s Strength in Attack and Defense
Mohamed praised his team’s performance, highlighting the importance of maintaining a clean sheet while continuing their impressive offensive production. He also acknowledged the internal competition among the team’s forwards, particularly Paulinho and Alexis Vega, who currently lead Toluca’s scoring charts with eight goals each.
“I believe our team has great attacking power. What stands out the most today, in my opinion, is keeping a clean sheet as visitors. We’ve managed to do that in our last two away games, against Juárez and now Puebla. The team continues to score consistently, and we are improving every day. The competition among our forwards is fantastic because it pushes everyone to perform at a high level, which benefits the team as a whole,” Mohamed stated in a press conference.
Areas for Improvement
Despite the 3-0 victory, Mohamed admitted that he was frustrated with the team’s ball circulation in the first half, particularly because Puebla effectively used man-marking to disrupt Toluca’s attack. However, he was pleased with how his squad adapted and adjusted their approach.
He also refrained from discussing potential Liguilla (playoff) qualification, instead focusing on short-term goals:
“We can’t look beyond the next match. We still have a lot to improve on, particularly in our understanding of how to manage different games. Opponents will present different challenges, and we won’t always be able to play our preferred style. That’s something we still need to develop,” Mohamed explained.
Toluca’s Position in the Standings
With 30 goals in 12 matches, Toluca currently boasts the most productive attack in the league and sits in third place, closely competing with Club América and the league leader.
When asked about his team’s goals for the season, Mohamed shared both the club’s and his personal ambitions:
“The club’s objective is to finish in the top four, but for us as a coaching staff, we want to finish as high as possible. We’ll assess our standing at the end of the season, but we’re on the right path. After the international break, we have two home games, and we aim to finish strong heading into the final stretch of the tournament.”
With Toluca in top form, the team looks poised to contend for the Liga MX title, but Mohamed insists there is still work to be done.
